National Mission on Agricultural Extension and Technology


The following is a brief introduction to the topic:

NMAET is an initiative of the Government of India to revamp agricultural extension services in order to bridge the gap that exists between researchers and farmers. The mission’s main purpose is to disseminate vital information to farmers and ensure that they have the most up-to-date technologies, tools, and practices to improve productivity and sustainability.

  • Expand the number of farmers who receive extension services and improve their quality.
  • Use of Information and Communication Technology and related tech solutions will improve the extension service.
  • Encourage the adoption of new agricultural practices and technologies.

NMAET Components

There are four main components to the National Mission on Agricultural Extension and Technology.

1. Sub Mission on Agricultural Extension

The main focus of this sub-mission is to restructure and strengthen the Extension Services in order to increase their effectiveness. The following are key activities:

  • Farm Technology Management Agencies are established to provide extension services in districts.
  • Promote Farmer Friend Initiatives whereby progressive farmers can be identified and are trained to assist other farmers.
  • To disseminate new information, demonstrations, trainings and exposures are conducted.

2. Sub-Mission on Seed and Planting Material

This sub-mission seeks to increase availability and access of quality planting materials and seeds. This component includes:

  • Supporting production and distribution certified seeds.
  • Encouragement of the establishment of seed banks, seed villages.
  • Promotion of seed treatment practices and other methods for seed management.

3. Sub-Mission for Agricultural Mechanization

The purpose of this sub-mission is to encourage the use and efficiency of agricultural equipment and machinery to increase productivity and decrease drudgery. Some of the key initiatives are:

  • Provide financial assistance to purchase agricultural machinery and equipment.
  • Set up Custom Hiring Centers where you can rent farm machinery.
  • Demonstrations and training programs to promote the use of modern machines.

4. Sub Mission for Plant Protection and Plant Quarantine

The main focus of this sub-mission is to protect crops against pests and disease and maintain biosecurity. The following are key activities:

  • Integrated Pest Management practices (IPM).
  • To prevent exotic diseases and pests from entering the country, quarantine measures should be strengthened.
  • Monitoring and surveillance programs are conducted to detect and contain pest outbreaks.

Example Success Stories

1. ATMA in Maharashtra

Maharashtra’s Agriculture Technology Management Agency, or ATMA, has demonstrated how coordinated extension services can have a positive impact. ATMA’s regular training and field demonstrations have helped farmers to adopt advanced farming methods and new crop varieties, leading them to higher yields.

2. Seed Village Program in Punjab

The Seed Village Program, in Punjab encourages farmers who produce quality seeds to share them with their neighbors. This program has increased seed availability, and dramatically reduced procurement costs. It benefits a significant number of small and margin farmers.

3. Hire Customized Staff in Tamil Nadu

Custom Hiring Centers have made it possible for Tamil Nadu’s small farmers to rent modern farming machinery. Renting equipment at reduced rates has allowed farmers to reduce costs of labor and boost efficiency.

4. IPM in Andhra Pradesh

The adoption of Integrated Pest Management practices in Andhra Pradesh has resulted in a reduction of the chemical pesticides used. Farmers receive training in organic pesticides as well as biological methods of control. This promotes sustainable farming.

What are the challenges and how can we move forward?

Even though NMAET has made significant progress, there are still many challenges to overcome:

  • Limited Awareness: Many farmers do not yet know the NMAET support and benefits that come with adopting new technology.
  • Infrastructure Constraints A lack of infrastructure or logistical support may hinder effective delivery of extension services.
  • Capacity building: Extension personnel and farmers need to be trained and equipped with the most recent agricultural advances.
  • The Resource Constraint: A lack of financial resources and limited human resources may affect the quality and extent of services.

In order to address these issues, we need a multifaceted approach:

  • ICTs and digital technologies can provide farmers with real-time, accurate information.
  • Strengthening Public-Private Partnerships to Leverage Resources and Expertise from the Private Sector
  • Collaboration between researchers, extension services and farmers is essential to ensuring the smooth transfer of technology and knowledge.
  • Improved infrastructure and support in terms of logistics to enable efficient extension service delivery at grassroots levels.
